I’m not usually one for posting links as posts but this is a good one. Basically it allows you to learn Linux via a browser although a VirtualBox disk image is also available (and recommended).

There will be some major outages in January/February as I’m moving Node Towers to a new attic :-) Stay tuned on the Node’s Google+ page for updates. Once all this is done, more articles will happen. Merry Christmas!

Apologies for the lack of updates – work taking up a lot of my time and I’m also in the process of moving house. Once this is done, I expect The Node to be down for a couple of weeks as I get my broadband transferred.
However, I’ve been playing around with Gentoo Linux recently and it’s a real education. Although it has a package manager (a good one too), everything is configured manually and compiled…including the kernel. I imagine I’ll move Joshua-14 over to Gentoo eventually but that could be a long time as it’s almost studying Linux rather than installing it. Nice :D

Also just picked up a Samsung Galaxy S3 Quad Core with ICS. So far, it good although it was a bit of a shock to move from stock Android to TouchWiz. It’s plenty powerful anyway and looked much more exciting than Google’s Galaxy Nexus (also made by Samsung). Although of course The Galaxy Nexus will get Android 4.1 “Jellybean” before anyone else.
Anyway, just retired my Nexus S. If I can get it to work with “smstools” under Ubuntu, I’ll post a tutorial.

I’ll be trying out some new themes for The Node over Christmas and see how I feel about them. The old theme was somewhat pale and a little hard on the eyes. This should only take a week to pick one :) After Christmas there will be some Android and electronics articles coming. Have a good Christmas! I’m going to be playing Skyrim (hopefully).

Okay, I know that the posts have mostly tailed off recently (work-related mostly), but I’ve decided to have a crack at Android. While my ultimate plans are for some sort of retro-style Android game, I’m going to start with a “proper” application which will probably be a more advanced version of my PodGrab Linux command line utility. This should cover most “regular” aspects of Android and put me in good stead for eventually linking my Arduino to Android. I’ll post anything interesting or useful as I go.

On the Linux front, I have a couple of articles planned for Apache virtual hosting, SSL certificates and HTTPS which will also happen at some point soon and maybe some bash programming nuggets. There are also a few minor updates to the Linux version of PodGrab that I’d like to throw in like downloading of textual RSS articles.

BTW, what’s people’s opinion of the Xbox 360 version of “Dead Island”? As buggy as the PC version?

Welcome to The Node. This will basically be a place to put all my little bits of Linux/programming knowledge and my thoughts on various things, technical and not so much.
